Major Collision Investigation Unit officials said the truck Gill was driving collided with a car yesterday morning.
Four bodies were recovered from the car, which burst into flames and was “almost instantly incinerated”. “This is a horrific scene,” Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said.
The force of the collision pushed the car about 40 metres along Caldermeade Road before the truck rolled on top of it and both vehicles caught fire.
Hill said the young boy was found wandering around the scene of the crash by a passerby.
“He was the sole surviving occupant of the sedan and he is currently at the Royal Children's Hospital suffering superficial injuries,” he said. He said it was the worst crash scene he had been called to in a long time. He added a number of lives were lost “because of the fact that someone has made a mistake”.
