Islamabad: At least 16 people, including women and children, were killed and over 40 others injured when militants bombed a train in Pakistan's restive southwestern Balochistan province today.

The blast took place inside the bogie number 9 of Rawalpindi-bound train Jaffar Express when passengers were disembarking at Sibi railway station.

District Police Officer in Sibi, Ghullam Abbas Tarar, said the death toll has climbed to 16 with over 40 persons injured.

According to reports, the 24 injured are in a critical condition and they will be shifted to Quetta as soon as they are stable enough to travel.

The explosion set the train on fire and destroyed a bogie.

Three other bogies were also engulfed in the fire.
