Around 1,500 boxes containing submachine guns, AK-47 assault rifles, submachine carbines, Chinese pistols, 840 rocket launchers, 27,000 grenades and 11.41 million bullets were seized from 10 trucks on April 2, 2004.
Meanwhile, newspapers today published the details of the verdict containing the observations about the role of Zia.
“It is mysterious that the then head of the government was silent when she was notified, and did not react sternly to such a huge event,” Judge S M Mojibur Rahman observed.
He also observed that such large-scale weapon trafficking was only possible because Barua was patronised by Bangladesh's intelligence officials and because they enjoyed support of the government.
“The evidence and statements of the arms haul cases reveals that this smuggling was done in collusion with the then government ministers, higher military and civil officials along with Barua,” the verdict read.
