The Painting department is the most loved department here, it has more than 7,500 works from the 13th century to 1848 and is managed by 12 curators who oversee the collection's display. It has the best of Western paintings like Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Madonna on the Rocks, Paris and Helen and The Coronation of Napoleon by J.L. David, and Johannes Vermeer's The Astronomer.
The Egyptian Antiquities Department housed in the oldest Sully Wing in the ground and first floors have artifacts like The Seated Scribe sculpture, a 4,000 year old Sphinx, and various jewelry, papyrus, musical instruments etc. dating back to the Pharaonic era.
Its Near Eastern Antiquities Department can bring you back to the pre-Islamic times in Persia, Levant and the Mesopotamian region.
The Sculpture Department has different sections including one dedicated to Michelangelo.
