The term derringer is a generic misspelling of the last name of Henry Deringer, a famous 19th-century maker of small pocket pistols.It is the smallest usable handgun of a given caliber. It was used by John Wilkes Booth to shoot U.S. President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865, while he was attending a performance at the Ford's Theater in Washington, DC.
