New Delhi: Student leaders of Hong Kong's pro-democracy demonstrations are now considering taking their demands for democracy directly to Beijing next month when the country will host a high-profile global summit.

After five weeks of blocked streets in three of Hong Kong's densely populated districts, very little progress has been made to solve the political crisis in the city.

At talks between students and Hong Kong government leaders last week, the city's No. 2 official stressed that she wouldn't ask China's leadership to revoke its plan to impose limits on how the city's leader is elected.

The move by students appears to be part of a broader strategy by the students to bypass the Hong Kong government.

Protesters are pressing for a greater say in choosing the semiautonomous Chinese city's leader in an inaugural direct election, promised for 2017.

China's hosting of the summit for the first time in 13 years is a ‘remarkable achievement' for its President Xi Jinping.
