Rio de Janeiro: At the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty during the 19th G-20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a statement was made by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He expressed confidence that success could be achieved quickly if responsibility for hunger and poverty issues was taken. Reflecting on his attendance at the first G20 Leaders' Meeting in Washington after the 2008 financial crisis, he noted with sadness that global conditions have worsened over 16 years. He highlighted the highest levels of armed conflicts since World War II, unprecedented forced displacements, devastating effects of extreme weather events, and deepening social, racial, and gender inequalities post-pandemic. Hunger and poverty were described as the ultimate symbols of this collective tragedy.
