Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron held a key bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 19th G-20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Monday (local time). According to the statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders discussed ways to deepen the strategic partnership between India and France, particularly in the areas of defences, technology, and artificial intelligence.

Official spokesperson, MEA - Randhir Jaiswal tweets, "PM Narendra Modi met PM Luís Montenegro of Portugal today, on the sidelines of the G-20 Brazil Summit in Rio.  Both sides deliberated on further strengthening India-Pourtgal bilateral ties, including in areas of the economy, renewable energy, defence and people-to-people ties & cooperation in multilateral fora."

"Glad to have met Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the Rio de Janeiro G20 Summit. Our talks centred around deepening ties in defence, security, trade and technology. We also talked about how to boost cooperation in culture, education and other such areas. India-Italy friendship can greatly contribute to a better planet," PM Modi posted after the meeting.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday (local time) held a bilateral meeting with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the meeting, the leaders, who are often dubbed as "Melodi", discussed enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and technology while exploring ways to strengthen cultural and people-to-people ties.  

"Had a very good meeting with Prime Minister of Portugal, Mr. Luís Montenegro. India cherishes the long-standing ties with Portugal. Our talks focussed on adding more vigour to our economic linkages. Sectors like renewable energy and green hydrogen offer many opportunities for collaboration. We also talked about strong defence relations, people-to-people linkages and other such subjects," tweeted PM Modi.

A bilateral meeting was held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, on the sidelines of the 19th G-20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

At the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty during the 19th G-20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, it was stated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that, according to the FAO, 733 million people will still face undernourishment in 2024. It was noted that this number is equivalent to the combined populations of Brazil, Mexico, Germany, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Canada experiencing hunger. The daily violation of the rights to life, education, development, and food for these individuals was highlighted. In a world producing nearly 6 billion tons of food annually and with military spending reaching $2.4 trillion, such a situation was deemed unacceptable.

At the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty during the 19th G-20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a statement was made by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He expressed confidence that success could be achieved quickly if responsibility for hunger and poverty issues was taken. Reflecting on his attendance at the first G20 Leaders' Meeting in Washington after the 2008 financial crisis, he noted with sadness that global conditions have worsened over 16 years. He highlighted the highest levels of armed conflicts since World War II, unprecedented forced displacements, devastating effects of extreme weather events, and deepening social, racial, and gender inequalities post-pandemic. Hunger and poverty were described as the ultimate symbols of this collective tragedy.

IMF Deputy MD Gita Gopinath praised PM Narendra Modi at the G20 Summit in Rio, highlighting India's achievements in reducing hunger, poverty, and its innovative global initiatives. She called the meeting "great" and emphasized India's inspiring progress. In response, PM Modi affirms India's commitment towards eradicating poverty and hunger. "India stands committed to promote food security and eliminate poverty. We will build on our successes and harness our collective strength and resources to ensure brighter future for all," he wrote.

PM Modi, lauding the efforts of Brazil said, "Commendable initiative by the Brazilian G20 Presidency for launching the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty at the G20 Summit in Rio De Janeiro.  This collaborative initiative marks a significant stride towards ensuring food security and uplifting vulnerable communities worldwide. India assures full support to this effort."

PM Modi met IMF's First Deputy MD Gita Gopinath during the G20 Leaders Summit. Responding to Gopinath's post, he said, "India stands committed to promoting food security and eliminate poverty. We will build on our successes and harness our collective strength and resources to ensure a brighter future for all."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with several world leaders, including from Brazil, Singapore and Spain, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit here. The Prime Minister was warmly received by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is hosting the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

At the G20 Summit, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed strong support for Brazilian President Lula's initiative to combat hunger through the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. This alliance aims to rally countries to address pressing global food insecurity and poverty challenges​

China's President Xi Jinping has announced an initiative with Brazil, South Africa, and the African Union to funnel sci-tech innovations to the Global South, Chinese state media reported. It comes at a time when the United States and its allies have cooperated to stop the export of high-end semiconductors to China and banned Chinese technology firms like Huawei.

India on Monday urged developed nations to eliminate intellectual property barriers to technology transfer and refrain from unfair trade practices that hinder climate action in developing countries. The appeal came during a high-level ministerial roundtable on pre-2030 ambition at the UN climate talks in Baku. India's environment secretary Leena Nandan said rich nations taking the lead in cutting emissions and achieving net-zero by 2030 is essential to build a stronger, sustainable future.

In line with the theme of the session, PM Modi also gave an overview of India's success in addressing hunger and poverty. "Over 800 million people are being given food grains free of cost. 550 million people are benefiting from the world's biggest health insurance scheme," he said. "Now, 60 million senior citizens, over the age of 70, will also be able to benefit from free health insurance," he said. "Maintaining our focus on women-led development and social inclusion, over 300 million women micro-entrepreneurs have been linked to banks and given access to credit," Modi added. The prime minister also spoke about India's crop insurance scheme.
 

The countries of the Global South are most adversely impacted by the food, fuel and fertilizer crisis caused by global conflicts and G20 must focus on addressing it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday.
In an address at a session at the G20 summit, Modi said India's G20 theme of "One Earth, One Family, One Future" is as relevant at the ongoing summit as it was last year. "I would like to say that countries of the Global South are most adversely impacted by the food, fuel and fertilizer crisis caused by global conflicts," he said. "So our discussions can only be successful when we keep in mind the challenges and priorities of the Global South," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the severe impact of food, fuel, and fertilizer crises on Global South nations, attributing it to ongoing global conflicts. He called for collective action to address these challenges during his address at the G20 Summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised inclusive development, women-led initiatives, and youth empowerment at the G20 Summit, highlighting efforts to uplift the aspirations of the Global South. He reiterated India’s commitment to fostering equity and growth for developing nations globally.

PM Modi said, "...We support Brazil’s initiative for a "Global Alliance against hunger and poverty”. This is an important step towards the implementation of the Deccan High level principles for Food security, adopted at the New Delhi Summit."

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: At the G20 Session on "Social Inclusion and the Fight Against Hunger and Poverty”, PM Narendra Modi said, "At the outset, I would like to congratulate President Lula for the grand arrangements made for the organisation of the G20 summit and for his successful G20 Presidency. The people-centric decisions taken at the G20 Summit in New Delhi have been taken forward during Brazil’s Presidency. It is a matter of great satisfaction that we prioritised SDG goals...It is clear that One Earth One Family One Future is as relevant at this summit as it was last year."

PM Modi said, "...Over the last 10 years, we have lifted 250 million people out of poverty. Over 800 million people are being given food grains free of cost. 550 million people are benefiting from the world’s biggest health insurance scheme. Now, 60 million senior citizens, over the age of 70, will also be able to benefit from free health insurance...India is also contributing to global food security. We have provided humanitarian assistance to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, recently."

There is no clarity yet on a bilateral meeting between Modi and Biden on the margins of the G20 summit in this Brazilian city. If there are no structured talks between the two leaders on the margin of the G20 summit, then the brief encounter could be their last one-on-one interaction before Biden hands over the US presidency to Republican leader Donald Trump next month. In the US presidential election held on November 5, 78-year-old Trump pulled off an incredible comeback, handing a crushing defeat to Democratic Party nominee Kamala Harris.

During the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, PM Narendra Modi held significant discussions with Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing global challenges like sustainable development and climate change.

Brazil has deployed troops, armoured vehicles, and naval ships to reinforce security around the G20 Summit.   Air traffic, including the use of drones, has been restricted and flights canceled for two days at the domestic Santos Dumont Airport nearby. Army soldiers patrolled near the museum where leaders are meeting, streets were closed to traffic and armored cars were parked outside. Naval boats patrolled the scenic Botafogo Bay between the museum and Rio's iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, while marines ran ashore from landing craft on an adjacent beach. 

Leaders of the world's biggest economies must send a clear signal on the need to tackle global warming, COP29 climate summit host Azerbaijan said on Monday. G20 leaders are meeting in Brazi,l but climate is just one item on an agenda that also spans the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and the implications of Donald Trump's US election victory. In Baku, the main objective for COP29 is to agree a deal on how to provide trillions of dollars in financing to tackle climate change. "We cannot succeed without them (G20), and the world is waiting to hear from them," COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev said. "They account for 85% of global GDP and 80% of emissions".

Leaders of the Group of 20 major economies began arriving on Monday at Rio de Janeiro's Modern Art Museum for their annual summit, bracing for a shift in the global order with the return to power of US President-elect Donald Trump. Host President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva received the heads of government on a red carpet at the museum where they will meet through midday on Tuesday.
