G20 Summit LIVE UPDATES: PM Modi vows support for Global Alliance against hunger and poverty

The countries of the Global South are most adversely impacted by the food, fuel and fertilizer crisis caused by global conflicts and G20 must focus on addressing it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday.
In an address at a session at the G20 summit, Modi said India's G20 theme of "One Earth, One Family, One Future" is as relevant at the ongoing summit as it was last year. "I would like to say that countries of the Global South are most adversely impacted by the food, fuel and fertilizer crisis caused by global conflicts," he said. "So our discussions can only be successful when we keep in mind the challenges and priorities of the Global South," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the severe impact of food, fuel, and fertilizer crises on Global South nations, attributing it to ongoing global conflicts. He called for collective action to address these challenges during his address at the G20 Summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised inclusive development, women-led initiatives, and youth empowerment at the G20 Summit, highlighting efforts to uplift the aspirations of the Global South. He reiterated India’s commitment to fostering equity and growth for developing nations globally.

PM Modi said, "...We support Brazil’s initiative for a "Global Alliance against hunger and poverty”. This is an important step towards the implementation of the Deccan High level principles for Food security, adopted at the New Delhi Summit."

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: At the G20 Session on "Social Inclusion and the Fight Against Hunger and Poverty”, PM Narendra Modi said, "At the outset, I would like to congratulate President Lula for the grand arrangements made for the organisation of the G20 summit and for his successful G20 Presidency. The people-centric decisions taken at the G20 Summit in New Delhi have been taken forward during Brazil’s Presidency. It is a matter of great satisfaction that we prioritised SDG goals...It is clear that One Earth One Family One Future is as relevant at this summit as it was last year."

PM Modi said, "...Over the last 10 years, we have lifted 250 million people out of poverty. Over 800 million people are being given food grains free of cost. 550 million people are benefiting from the world’s biggest health insurance scheme. Now, 60 million senior citizens, over the age of 70, will also be able to benefit from free health insurance...India is also contributing to global food security. We have provided humanitarian assistance to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, recently."

There is no clarity yet on a bilateral meeting between Modi and Biden on the margins of the G20 summit in this Brazilian city. If there are no structured talks between the two leaders on the margin of the G20 summit, then the brief encounter could be their last one-on-one interaction before Biden hands over the US presidency to Republican leader Donald Trump next month. In the US presidential election held on November 5, 78-year-old Trump pulled off an incredible comeback, handing a crushing defeat to Democratic Party nominee Kamala Harris.

During the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, PM Narendra Modi held significant discussions with Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing global challenges like sustainable development and climate change.

Brazil has deployed troops, armoured vehicles, and naval ships to reinforce security around the G20 Summit.   Air traffic, including the use of drones, has been restricted and flights canceled for two days at the domestic Santos Dumont Airport nearby. Army soldiers patrolled near the museum where leaders are meeting, streets were closed to traffic and armored cars were parked outside. Naval boats patrolled the scenic Botafogo Bay between the museum and Rio's iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, while marines ran ashore from landing craft on an adjacent beach. 

Leaders of the world's biggest economies must send a clear signal on the need to tackle global warming, COP29 climate summit host Azerbaijan said on Monday. G20 leaders are meeting in Brazi,l but climate is just one item on an agenda that also spans the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and the implications of Donald Trump's US election victory. In Baku, the main objective for COP29 is to agree a deal on how to provide trillions of dollars in financing to tackle climate change. "We cannot succeed without them (G20), and the world is waiting to hear from them," COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev said. "They account for 85% of global GDP and 80% of emissions".

Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva opened the G20 summit with the launch of a global alliance to combat poverty and hunger, which he called the result of political decisions. Lula said the devastating effects of climate change are to be seen all around the world and urged leaders to have the courage to act.

Leaders of the Group of 20 major economies began arriving on Monday at Rio de Janeiro's Modern Art Museum for their annual summit, bracing for a shift in the global order with the return to power of US President-elect Donald Trump. Host President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva received the heads of government on a red carpet at the museum where they will meet through midday on Tuesday.
