Tokyo, Jul 2: The operator of Japan's crippled nuclear plant said on Tuesday that it would apply for safety inspections at two idled reactors at another of its plants so it can restart operations there, as the company seeks to improve its business following the Fukushima crisis.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said it would file a request with the government watchdog for inspections at two of seven reactors at its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in central Japan under new safety regulations taking effect July 8.

TEPCO said it had gained support from local communities that have turned anti-nuclear since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami caused the nuclear accident.

A resumption at the plant is key to TEPCO, which needs massive funds to cover compensation related to the Fukushima disaster and to fully decommission the crippled plant.
