Voters in Witham made history by sending the first female Conservative Asian MP to parliament.


Priti Patel will represent the newly formed constituency after taking 24,448 votes.

The Liberal Democrats took second place, with Margaret Phelps receiving 9,252 votes, followed by Labour man John Spademan with 8,656.

Mrs Patel, who was hotly tipped to take the seat, considered to be a Tory stronghold, said: "I would like to thank all the candidates, it has been a tremendous campaign.

"Everyone has fought a very clean campaign which shows our parliamentary democracy in a good light."

Priti lives in the heart of the new constituency, in Witham with her husband and one and half year old son. She was born in London and was educated at a comprehensive secondary school in Watford and finished her formal education at the University of Essex.



Priti's home and early life has played a large part in forming her political beliefs. Her parents, have run a number of small businesses around the South East and the East of England and her family has always lived and worked by the strong traditions of self-help, the importance of family life and support of the local community.

Priti has worked in the communications industry for over ten years and until recently was the Director of Corporate Communications at a major international company.

She has worked around the world and has direct experience of dealing with a diverse range of issues including; bringing education to communities in Africa and India, to foreign direct investment around the world and agricultural issues in the UK. As a former School Governor, Priti cares passionately about education, she is a supporter of a number of charitable organisations across the constituency and as a young mother she understands the wide range of issues affecting people in the local area.

Priti fundamentally believes in the principles of accountability, transparency, fair play and in putting Britain first when it comes to issues such as Europe and immigration. Priti is a straight talker and whether you agree or disagree with her views she is prepared to defend the interests of local people across all the new Witham Constituency.

She also has a strong held and unwavering belief in NEVER abolishing the pound, she is a forthright supporter of transparent Policing who wants to see the streets reclaimed for the law abiding majority and genuine life sentences for the most serious of crimes. Priti is determined to be a strong voice for all our local communities in Parliament.
