Washington, Jul 21: ‘Brylcreem' and ‘30 plus' were some of the codes used for monetary transactions between Pakistan's snooping agency ISI and Kashmiri propogandist Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai, who was arrested by the FBI recently here.
In the affidavit submitted by the FBI, investigators said that Fai's Pakistani handler Javed Azeed Khan asked him if he had received all the goods.
In reply Fai told him that everything has been received except “Brylcreem, 75 milligram”. FBI investigators suspected that this was a code for the transferring USD 75,000 demanded by Fai from his ISI-handlers for running Kashmiri propaganda in the US through his Kashmiri American Council unearthed by the American probe agency.
In the same conversation with Khan, Fai asked him to bring “two three pieces of Brylcreem” to London which FBI suspects to be the demand of USD 20,000-30,000 from his Pakistani handlers.
Next year, Fai used different codes for demanding money from another handler Ahmed and this time it was the famous brand of energy casule “30 plus”.
FBI believes that “30 plus” is a coded reference for supplying USD 30,000 for Fai. The investigators said in their affidavit before the court that within three months of the conversation with Ahmed three cheques totalling USD 23,000 were deposited in Kashmiri American Council account between January 10 and March 28, 2011.
The “library in Islamabad” was the code for ISI's Security Directorate, and the “Tall Man” was ISI Major General Mumtaz Ahmad Bajwa, “Mir Saheb” was Mahmood. Many of these coded languages were in medical terminology. And sometime it was in editorial language, wherein “157 page draft” meant USD 157,000 and “last edition” meant last installment of the money.
“15 copies” meant USD 15,000, the FBI said. In one of the communications, Fai referred to his ISI handler as the “Tall Man” who he met in Geneva. By “Tall Man” FBI said Fai was referring to the ISI Maj Gen Bajwa, who retired on April 30, 2010.
According to the affidavit, April 7, 2011, Butt wrote an email to Fai saying, “Likely to meet with friend Doctor today for need full.”
Fai responded the next day by writing “Doctor Sahib already informed me that Aspirin was the right medicine which has been delivered.”
The next day, Butt wrote back, “Go as per the advice of doctor, but keep the dose low.”
“I believe that Fai and Butt were using coded language to discuss Fai's financial transactions with Ahmad, and that Butt was warning Fai not to spend (or request) too much money,” Sarah Webb Linden, the Special FBI Agent, said in her affidavit to the court.
In another email, Fai's ISI handler Butt asked Fai for additional information to “complete my update for elders”.
Linden said by this phrase Butt was briefing Fai's information up his chain of command and that Fai was aware that his information had a great audience than just Butt. PTI
