New Delhi: TIME Magazine's 2014 ‘Person of the Year' title has not gone to any individual but to a group consisting of highly inspired and dedicated people.

The world-renowned magazine has named, ‘Ebola fighters' -- the countless doctors, nurses and caregivers -- for their tireless acts of courage to battle the worst ever outbreaks of the deadly virus, as the 2014 ‘Person of the Year'.

TIME's editors announced ‘Ebola fighters' as the winner of the title  from an initial list of 50 world leaders, business heads and record-breaking artists that was narrowed down to a list of eight this week.

The magazine had conducted a separate online poll allowing its readers to select who they think is the right person to win this year's title.

The readers' poll was won by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who managed to secure more than 16 per cent of the almost five million votes cast. Modi was among the 50 global leaders, business chiefs and pop icons named as contenders for the annual honour.

The Indian Prime Minister, however, did not make it to the final shortlist of eight. Names of the eight finalists were announced by TIME editor Nancy Gibbs that included founder and CEO of the Alibaba Group Jack Ma, Apple CEO Tim Cook, pop star Taylor Swift, Ferguson protestors, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ebola caregivers, National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell and President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq Masoud Barzani.

The annual honour that has been bestowed by the magazine since 1927 goes to the person who  ‘most influenced the news' during the year ‘for better or worse'.
