Sikorsky and Aurora Flight Sciences have each won contracts from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to build a new X-Plane.

Under DARPA's Phase 1 contracts, these companies - and up to two more still unannounced bidders - will spend the next 22 months developing a preliminary design for a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft dubbed the VTOL X-Plane.
