Bali: Arrested gangster Chhota Rajan, who will be deported to India from Indonesia tomorrow, will be taken to Delhi first instead of Mumbai, sources said.

Rajan will remain in the custody of CBI in Delhi, sources said, adding that central probe agency will interrogate him to establish further links of his crime.

It should be noted that Rajan, 55, had repeatedly conveyed to Indian officials his reluctance to go to Mumbai because of threats from underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Rajan was scheduled to be deported to India today but the closure of international airport in Bali forced the Indian Interpol team to cancel the plan.

Authorities in Indonesia closed the Ngurah Rai International Airport here late yesterday due to a large ash cloud drifting from Mount Rinjani, an active volcano on the nearby island.

An Indian Police team, which arrived in Bali on Sunday, has already completed all formalities for taking custody of Rajan and flying him to India. Rajan will be taken in a special aircraft, which has been brought here from India.

Rajan, whose real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, is wanted in over 75 heinous crimes ranging from murder, extortion to smuggling and drug trafficking.

He was arrested in Bali on the basis of a Red Corner Notice from Interpol and following a tip off by Australian authorities to the police in Indonesia.

In 2000, there was an attempt on Rajan's life when his arch rival and India's most wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim's men tracked him down to a hotel in Bangkok but he managed a dramatic escape.
