Krakatoa Krakatoa is a volcanic island situated between the island of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. The eruption of 1883, comprising of a series of four huge explosions, was so violent that they were heard 3,110 km away. The eruption unleashed huge tsunamis killing more than 36,000 people and destroying over two-thirds of the island.
Mount Tambora Mount Tambora is an active stratovolcano on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia. Its 1815 outburst was the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history killing around 92,000 people, out of which 11,000–12,000 were killed directly by the eruption.
Huaynaputina A stratovolcano located in a volcanic upland in southern Peru, Huaynaputina does not have an identifiable mountain profile, but instead has the form of a large volcanic crater. Its 1960's explosion is recorded as the largest volcanic explosion in South America in historic times. The eruption continued with a series of events into March killing around two million people.
