Canberra: The Australian Federal Police (AFP) on Friday announced that an 18-year-old boy from the state of Queensland, fled to Syria and joined the Nusra Front, the official Syrian affiliate of the Al Qaeda.

According to the AFP, the teenager fled last month from his hometown of Toowoomba, 125 km west of Queensland's capital Brisbane, ABC reported.

Reports said that he concocted a story to trick his family into allowing him to leave.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the news was concerning.

"We need to make sure that disengaged youth are not being subjected to encouragement from terrorist organisations," she said.

"As a state and as a country we need to do more."

Last month, former Queensland doctor Tareq Kamleh appeared in an Islamic State (IS) propaganda video revealing he had travelled to Syria to work for the terrorist organisation.

He urged other Australian medical professionals to do likewise.
