Sydney, Oct 26: Australia needs to get into the habit of talking with Asia as much as with Washington, Foreign Minister Bob Carr said Friday.
Speaking at an Asialink conference in Sydney, Carr used Myanmar as an example of fostering relationship between Australia and Asia.
Australia has built a “terrific relationship” with Myanmar after pushing internationally for a lifting of sanctions against the Southeast Asian country, Xinhua quoted Carr as saying.
“We need to get into a habit of mind where consultations with Asia become our second nature as much as consultation with our friends in Washington,” he said.
“And I think we're getting there.”
The minister said Australia had encouraged the European Union and others to follow its lead and had also led a change to the annual United Nations statement on Myanmar.
