Zakir Mumtaz, believed to be a resident of a village near Amritsar, was admitted to Jinnah hospital on Wednesday after he fell ill in Lahore's notorious Kot Lakhpat jail, sources said.

Zaqir Mumtaz was was arrested on August 3, 2011 while crossing the border illegally. He was held in a jail in Sheikhaupura before being sent to Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore.
The incident comes just two months after Sarabjit Singh, an Indian on death row, in Kot Lakhpat jail since 1990, was killed on May 1, 2013 by an inmate. He was convicted by Pakistan's Supreme Court for his involvement in a serial bomb blasts in Lahore and Faislabad that had killed 14 people. Pakistan claimed that he was an Indian spy planted by intelligence agencies to create unrest in the country, a charge India always refuted.
Similarly, another Indian prisoner Chamel Singh was attacked by jail warders for washing his clothes at a jail tap, after which he succumbed to severe internal injuries.
