Islamabad: Seven persons on board Quetta-bound Jaffar Express train were killed today in a remote control bomb blast on a railway track in Pakistan's restive Balochistan province.

The train, which departed from Rawalpindi, was passing through Dera Murad Jamali district of the restive Balochistan province when the blast occurred.

Media reports had earlier suggested that it was a suicide attack but state-run Radio Pakistan said it was a remote control bomb blast.

More than 10 people were also injured when five bogies of the train were derailed.

Security personnel reached the site and cordoned off the area as a probe into the incident went underway.

Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafiq has termed the attack on Jaffar Express as a cowardly and barbaric act.

Seven people have been killed and more than 10 injured in the bomb blast, Rafiq said. He feared that the death toll can rise as rescue efforts are still underway.

Rafiq said that relief trains have been sent from Sukkur and Sibi' while ambulances and police vans are also busy in shifting the injured to the hospitals.

On August 15, suspected militants attacked a Rawalpindi-bound passenger train with rockets in Bolan district, killing at least two persons and injuring 32 others.
