Billionaire investor Warren Buffett tore into Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump for criticising the family of a Muslim American soldier who was killed in action.

Mr. Buffett appeared at a rally with Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee, in his hometown, Omaha.

"How in the world can you stand up to a couple of parents who've lost a son and talked about sacrificing because you were building a bunch of buildings?" Buffett said before channeling Joseph Welch's question during the 1954 McCarthy hearings.

"I ask Donald Trump: have you no sense of decency, sir?"

Buffett called Trump's comments "the final straw," arguing that his family had not sacrificed like military families.

Buffett, who endorsed Clinton last year, was the latest in a series of business leaders attacking Trump as Clinton seeks to woo moderate and independent voters.

His appearance made him the latest billionaire to come out strongly against Trump. He is the third business leader to speak in support of Clinton in less than a week. Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg amed investor Mark Cuban have thrown their weight behind the democrat presidential nominee.

Buffett, the founder of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. BRK.B, -0.24%  , also called on Trump to release his tax returns like all other major presidential candidates have since 1980. Trump has refused to do, saying he cannot release his returns because he is being audited by the IRS.

"Trump can pick "any place, any time between now and election," and Omaha billionaire Buffett will bring his tax returns — if Trump does too." I'll bring my tax return. He can bring his tax return ... Just let people ask us questions about the items that are on there."

The head of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Brian Duffy. Mr. Duffy said his organization would not “tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising his or her right of speech or expression.”

Without naming Mr. Trump, President Barck Obama made his message clear when he said that “no one — no one — has given more for our freedom and security than our Gold Star families.”

Humayun's father Khizr Khan, in a moving tribute to his son at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia while posthumously receiving a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart after he was killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2004, stunned a national audience with a speech directly confronting Trump, who has called for a ban on Muslims entering the US.

He asking the 70-year-old real estate tycoon to "go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America". "You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing and no one."

Trump argued he "made a lot of sacrifices" and worked "very, very hard".

"I've created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures," he said. "Sure those are sacrifices."

"I think my popularity with the vets is through the roof," he claimed.

Responding to a question, Trump alleged that Khan's wife Ghazala, who was standing besides him wearing a headscarf during the speech, was not allowed to speak.

"His wife, if you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, may be she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. You tell me, but plenty of people have written that. She was extremely quiet and it looked like she had nothing to say," he said.
