UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the terror attack on a police academy in Pakistan's Quetta city, calling for perpetrators of the "abhorrent act" of violence to be brought to justice swiftly.

In a statement issued by his office yesterday, Ban said he condemns the attack in which at least 61 people, mostly cadets, were killed and more than 100 people injured.

Ban stressed on the urgency of bringing the perpetrators of "abhorrent act of violence" to swift justice.

Quetta, the capital of the Balochistan province and situated about 920 kilometres from the national capital Islamabad, has suffered a number of violent attacks.

In August, more than 70 people were killed in a terrorist bombing at the Quetta Civil Hospital where dozens of lawyers had gathered to mourn the killing of a prominent colleague.

In January, 15 people were killed and some 25 injured in a suicide attack targeting a polio eradication centre in the city.

The Secretary-General extended his condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Pakistan.
