Targeting Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former President General Pervez Musharraf on Saturday said that Islamabad is facing international isolation because of its government’s "wrong policies”.
Musharraf’s remarks come in the wake of India’s successful efforts to isolate Pakistan at international level after the attack on Indian army base in Uri.
Nawaz Sharif is facing criticism at home over the diplomatic failure of his government. Yesterday, at a rally in Nawaz’s home town of Raiwind, cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan had also targeted him for the same.
Speaking by telephone to All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) workers on the party’s sixth foundation day, Musharraf said, “It is astonishing that the government has taken and spent a loan of $35 billion but not a single beneficial megaproject has been completed with that money. Instead, the people have been suffering because of the government’s corruption.”
Musharraf had earlier said that democracy in Pakistan had not been tailored to its environment and that’s the reason why the Army has often played a prominent role in the governance of the country.
In his address to party workers, Musharraf also targeted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said, “India should realise that Pakistan is not Bhutan. India has a habit of levelling allegations against Pakistan each time there’s an attack on its soil.”
After the Uri attack that led to the death of 19 soldiers, India backed out of SAARC summit scheduled for November in Islamabad saying the “environment was not conducive to the successful holding” of the meet.
Later, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Bhutan and Sri Lanka also refused to attend the Summit citing concerns over terrorism.
Pakistan said yesterday that t was postponing the SAARC Summit.
