New Delhi: In an interesting change of strategy, China today compared India’s NSG case with that of North Korea and Iran.
Surprisingly, China preferred to maintain silence on the application of Pakistan.
"And in the absence of NPT as the political and legal basis, how could the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula be resolved? All these merit reflection," Wang Qun, Director General of the Department of Arms Control of the Foreign Ministry, said in the statement.
" In the absence of NPT as political and legal basis, it will be inconceivable for the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear issue to be reached," he added.
Observers of international relations have pointed out that China deliberately skipped mentioning Pakistan because Beijing was being accused of encouraging Islamabad to apply for NSG membership to create hurdles in the way of India getting entry into the 48-member club.
Chinese attempt to equate India’s case with North Korea and Iran is being seen as its attempt to negate the impression that it is trying to deliberately block India’s entry by bringing in Pakistan, another non-NPT state, into the picture.
