Israel’s Attorney General has ordered police to open a criminal investigation in two matters involving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to media reports, the Prime Minister will be investigated for two separate cases -- campaign donations and a Defence Ministry deal to buy submarines from Germany.

Netanyahu will be summoned to give evidence following a nine month police inquiry into the matters, reports said.

Police have reportedly been investigating allegations of bribery and fraud against Netanyahu.

The accusations, believed to be related to alleged donations, have been dismissed by a spokesperson for the Israeli leader as ‘nonsense’.

Netanyahu has also been accused of wrongdoing in the purchase of submarines from Germany, where media have reported a potential conflict of interest involving his lawyer. The Prime Minister has denied the allegations.

“Since Netanyahu’s victory in the last elections and even before, hostile elements have used heroic efforts to attempt to bring about his downfall, with false accusations against him and his family. This is absolutely false. There was nothing and there will be nothing,” the spokesperson said.
