In a major setback to the Nawaz Sharif-led government in Pakistan, the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) today rejected the federal government’s proposal to include teachings of the Quran in school syllabus.
According to a report in The Dawn, the Nawaz Sharif government had sent a set of books containing Quran verses with translation to the CII for vetting.
The Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, which sent these books, had also proposed to teach them in schools up to class tenth.
However, the CII members refused to incorporate these books in school syllabus saying they had too many lacunas.
The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), chaired by Maulana Mohammad Khan Sheerani, also discussed the Hague convention on Parental Responsibility and Protection of Children.
The council advised against signing the Haque convention by pointing out that certain clauses were contradictory to the Constitution of Pakistan.
The CII also noted that clause 20 of the Convention that deals with the custody of the child was a violation of international human rights.
