New Delhi: Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had financed the deadly 2009 terror attack at a camp of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) camp in Afghanistan that left 7 officials dead, a cable declassified by the National Security Archive has revealed.
According to a Times of India report, the spy agency had provided USD 200,000 to Haqqani for launching attack on the CIA facility at Camp Chapman.
On December 30, 2009, seven CIA agents including the base's female chief were killed when a suicide attack by Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi, a Jordanian doctor and double agent, struck the CIA facility.
The TOI report further mentioned that some funding for Haqqani attacks are still provided by ISI.
Khalil, whom the CIA was trying to use to infiltrate al-Qaida in Pakistan in its hunt for Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri, was turned around the Haqqani group.
The leaked cable also highlighted the frequent meetings between Haqqani members and the ISI. "As of late December 2009, at the end of every month, senior Haqqani Network leadership met with the ISID in Islamabad, the meetings were attended by Siraj Haqqani and Badruddin Haqqani. ISI Colonel Nasib chaired the meetings. An unknown amount of funding was provided to the Haqqanis for use in unspecified operations," it said.
ISI has been accused of facilitating terror attacks in Afghanistan and Indian. Recently, 26/11 convict David Headley had claimed that the Pak spy agency provided financial support to terror group LeT to carry out attack in Mumbai that left 166 people dead.
