New Delhi:  In a major surprise, Switzerland has gone back on its promise to support India’s entry into NSG.

Switzerland had extended its support for India’s NSG bid after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Geneva early this month.

According to reports emanating from Seoul where the NSG plenary session is going on, Switzerland, in a curious turn of events, changed its stand and joined hands with China, Turkey, Ireland, Austria and New Zealand to oppose India’s entry into NSG.

These reports suggest that Switzerland has also taken the same line that New Delhi can’t be admitted because it is not a signatory to NPT(Nuclear non-proliferation Treaty) which is a pre-requisite for joining NSG.

Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann had extended his  country’s support to India’s NSG bid on June 6 after his meeting with the visiting Indian PM Narendra Modi.

“We have promised India support in its efforts to become a member of NSG,” Schneider-Ammann  had said at a joint media interaction.

PM Modi had responded by thanking the Swiss President for his support to India.

“I am thankful to the President for Switzerland’s understanding and support for India’s membership of the NSG, ” PM Modi had said.
