Washington: The proposal by Donald Trump to ban the entry of Muslims in the US in light of the Orlando terror attack has not gone down well with the US Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.
Speaking to ABC's "Good Morning America", Johnson said that such a ban is "overly simplistic" and "counterproductive".
"Overly simplistic suggestions that we ban people from entering this country based on religion or ban people from an entire region of the world is counterproductive. It will not work." Johnson said.
"We need to build bridges to communities, to American Muslim communities right now, to encourage them to help us in our homeland security efforts," he added.
Trump, on Monday, vowed to suspend immigration of countries with a history of terrorism if he becomes President.
He also suggested some Muslims in the United States are turning a blind eye to unfolding plots, as he outlined an aggressive response to the deadly attack in Orlando.
Trump said of the Orlando gunman - who was born only a few miles from Trump in Queens, New York - “The only reason that the killer was in America in the first place was that we allowed his family to come here.”
