US President Donald Trump on Wednesday accused China of attempting to meddle in the United States elections, scheduled for November 6. Trump claimed the meddling came in retaliation for the tariffs his administration has imposed on Chinese goods.
Addressing a meet focussing on the issue of nuclear non-proliferation, Trump said, “Regrettably, we found that China has been attempting to interfere in our upcoming 2018 election, coming up in November, against my administration.”
"They do not want me, or us, to win because I am the first president ever to challenge China on trade and we are winning on trade, we are winning at every level. We don't want them to meddle or interfere in our upcoming election," he added.
The accusation by the US president were however, denounced and were termed ‘unwarranted’ by China's foreign minister present at the Security Council meeting.
"We do not and will not interfere in any country's domestic affairs. We refuse to accept any unwarranted accusations against China," Wang Yi said.
The US government had found signs of possible attempts by Russia and China to interfere in the November midterm elections, the National Intelligence Director Dan Coats had said two weeks ago.
