New Delhi: Rising illegal trade in wildlife products have conservationist worried and the concerns of activists are echoed by United Nations as well. To raise global awareness on wildlife conservation, UN has themed this year’s World Environment Day as “Go wild for life-zero tolerance for the illegal wildlife trade.”
World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5. This day is celebrated to raise to global awareness so that some positive environmental action could be taken to protect nature and the planet Earth.
It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The rising illegal trade in wildlife products is not only destroying Earth’s precious biodiversity but also making us deprived of our natural heritage.
There are number of species who are being mercilessly killed and smuggled for their meat, fur, skin, tusks etc.
Its high time that we all should stand firmly against wildlife crime and take some stern action at both individual and governmental levels to protect our wildlife resources that ensures sustainability of our precious planet.
United Nation on this day is encouraging everyone to come forward and take action to protect species that are under threat. This step is must so that our future generations will also learn the values of preserving wildlife and become socially responsible.
Meanwhile, Governor of Assam and Nagaland P B Acharya has conveyed his message to the people on World Environment Day that raises global awareness about the importance of healthy and green environment in human lives.
In his message the Governor said, "World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 to raise global awareness, to take positive environmental action, to protect nature and the planet Earth.
"World Environment Day is also known as Environment Day, Eco Day or short form WED. It has been one of the great annual events for years which is being celebrated worldwide by the people aiming to protect the unique and life nurturing Nature," Acharya said.
