Help is coming from unexpected corners for the Odisha tribal Dana Manjhi who walked 12 kms carrying his dead wife for 12 kms, sending shockwaves around the country.
Moved by the plight of Manjhi, the Bahrain Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has reportedly offered to extend financial help to the grieving family.
“His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa read about the man, who carried his wife’s body for 12 km after the hospital where she died allegedly failed to provide an ambulance for her to be sent back to their village,” the Gulf Daily News reported on Sunday.
“The Gulf Daily News learned exclusively yesterday that the Premier was so upset by the news that he felt he had to do something to help. He could not just stand by and do nothing about such suffering. The Prime Minister’s office contacted Bahrain’s Indian Embassy, and, in an extraordinary humanitarian gesture has donated a sum of money to help the man and his family,” the daily said.
The Indian embassy in Bahrain is, however, yet to receive an official confirmation from the office of Bahrain Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa about the amount.
The report did not mention about the sum. One Bahraini Dinar equals Rs 178 Indian Rupee.
They said that should such a contribution be made, it will be channeled through the Bahraini embassy in Delhi.
The report did not mention the sum the Bahraini premier plans to contribute.
On August 24 in Odishas backward Kalahandi district, Dana Manjhi was forced to carry his wifes body on his shoulder for 10 kilometres due to alleged lack of an ambulance.
Majhis 42-year-old wife died of tuberculosis a day before at the district hospital at Bhawanipatna.
