Midnapore (WB): A 22-year old woman immolated herself after being allegedly physically assaulted and abused by a group of young men in West Midnapore district today, a senior police officer said.
The woman died of burn wounds at the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital today after setting herself aflame last night, Additional SP Avdesh Pathak said.
She had been taunted and allegedly physically assaulted after she tried to stop some local youths from attacking her father last evening, the ASP said.
Unable to bear the taunts and misbehaviour she locked her room from inside and the neighbours had to rescue her and rush to hospital after hearing the screams late last night.
Based on the dying declaration of the woman, where she mentioned the physical assault and misbehaviour by some men in the locality, two youths have been arrested including the main accused Sukumar Bhagat.
Police is on the lookout for two other absconders.
