Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has directed that all worn-out footbridges over canals be converted into concrete, as lakhs of people use such bridges every day and there is an issue of their safety. An allocation of Rs 60 crore has been made to implement the projects.
Fifty-six such footbridges over have been identified for work so far.
The state irrigation department has taken up work on converting all bamboo footbridges across canals in the state into concrete ones.
State irrigation minister Rajib Banerjee said work had been started on the chief minister's instructions.
