The West Bengal government's offer of a plot of land in South Kolkata to tennis star Sania Mirza stood cancelled, since she was unwilling to accept it.
"Sania refused to accept the offer in a communication some time back saying she did not need it and the required money was also not deposited," Urban Development Minister Asok Bhattacharya told reporters in Kolkata on Wednesday.
He said that the offer was given to Sania during the first Sunfeast Open Tennis Tournament held here in 2005 when she had expressed her love for Kolkata and wished to stay here. Accordingly, a plot of five katha (about 335 sq metres) was given to her, Bhattacharya said. The state government has given plots of land to a number of sports personalities in the metropolis, including former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. PTI
