Gurgaon: Veteran Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Ashok Singhal today passed away at a Gurgaon hospital. He was 89.
Singhal was admitted to a hospital here after developing heart and kidney problems and breathlessness.
Born in 1926 at Agra, he was the international working president of VHP until 2011.
He joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1942.
In 1980, he became VHP general secretary.
He was a key organizer of the first VHP Dharma Sansad in 1984 held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, attracting hundreds of sadhus and Hindu notables to discuss the issues of rejuvenating Hinduism. The movement for reclaiming the Ramjanmabhoomi temple was born here.
