New Delhi, Nov 2: Veteran cartoonist T Samuel, a pioneer of pocket cartoons in the country, died here today, his family said. He was 86.




He is survived by his wife Mary Samuel, son and two daughters.

His burial will take place at Nicholson Cemetry near Kashmiri Gate Metro Station tomorrow.

Samuel, who hailed from Kollam in Kerala, started his career as a cartoonist with the Civil and Military Gazette published from Lahore before independence.

During the Partition, he reached Delhi as a refugee and joined the famous "Shankar's Weekly", contributing the Silent Strip Cartoon "Kalu and Meena" and a few other social cartoons.

After four years, he joined the Delhi edition of the Times of India as their Staff Cartoonist and became famous as a creator of the Pocket Cartoon "Babuji", Cartoon Academy said in a release.

Later, he joined the Indian Express where he continued his popular cartoon feature "Babuji" and the strip cartoon "Garib" in addition to regular political round up.

He rejoined the Times of India and the Nav Bharat Times where he worked till his retirement in 1985, the Academy said.

Samuel, who drew cartoons under the nom-de-plume of 'SAMUEL' was born on May 8, 1925 at Kollam, Mayannad.
