Srinagar: Cold wave continued across Jammu and Kashmir on Friday as night temperatures remained several notches below the freezing point in the Valley. Also, Jammu city recorded the season's lowest temperature.
"The minimum temperature was minus 4.2 degrees Celsisus in Srinagar, it was minus 5.6 degrees Celsius in Gulmarg and minus 7 degrees Celsius in Pahalgam today (Friday). Night temperature dropped to minus 14.2 in Leh town while Kargil recorded minus 13.6 degrees," an official of Met department told IANS here.
"The night temperature in Jammu city dropped to season's lowest so far at 3.8 degrees," the official said.
The official also said cold wave conditions would continue across the state till Saturday as the weather is expected to remain dry during this period.
Most water bodies in the Valley, including the Dal Lake in Srinagar city, were partially frozen Friday morning.
Water taps in the city were also frozen as people were seen burning small fires around water pipes to de-freeze them.
Parents cautioned children not to venture outside on bare feet as chilblain is a common winter ailment that affects children in Kashmir.
Kashmir is passing through the 40-day long period of harsh winter known as the 'Chilla Kalan'. The period starts Dec 21 and ends Jan 31.
