New Delhi, July 29:  The Indian Express on Friday published a report saying that a confidential report sent by the local intelligence unit (LIU) of Dehradun Police  to the then chief prosecution officer had said that Balkrishna was a Nepalese citizen and had been carrying an Indian passport since 1998.

While granting clearance to Acharya Balkrishna for a fresh passport, the police in Dehradun chose to ignore the intelligence report on Baba Ramdev's aide that revealed his identity as a Nepalese citizen and the fact that he had obtained an Indian passport based on fake documents, the IE report said. Balkrishna had also got two arms licenses using the same passport.

A confidential report sent by the local intelligence unit (LIU) of Dehradun police to the then chief prosecution officer Gopal Dutt Joshi in 2005 had said that Balkrishna is a Nepalese citizen and had been carrying an Indian passport (number AS-245797) since 1998.

The letter, dated August 1, 2005, was sent to chief prosecution officer by the inspector of local intelligence unit.To this letter, Joshi replied vide his official letter no 7/2004-2005, stating that a case under relevant sections can be registered against Balkrishna. However, no action was taken by the police and a new passport was issued to him in 2007. This, the investigators say, was done to cover up the earlier LIU report.

The CBI, which has started a probe into the case against Balkrishna, said they have found the LIU's report and Joshi's reply to it, and will examine the officials who gave the report.

“It is surprising that despite the LIU report, Balkrishna was given clearance for a new passport by senior police officials. We need to examine why the local police did not lodge a case against Balkrishna if there were reports of him using fake documents for an Indian passport,” said a top CBI official.

CBI officials, will ho are all set to question Balkrishna on Friday at Dehradun, said that he will be questioned on the two passports. It is also alleged that Balkrishna got to know about the LIU report and immediately applied for a new passport using a different address. The new passport (number Z 1339050) was issued in February 2007.
