Lucknow, March 22: Seized of a huge manpower shortage in Uttar Pradesh Police, the state government has sanctioned a major recruitment drive under which 2,200 computer operators, 4,000 sub-inspectors and 24,000 constables would be recruited.

An announcement that such appointments would be made in the next few months was made in the state assembly Thursday by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

Officials told IANS that as the budget clearances for the recruitment drive were granted, the vacancies would be filled over the next year.

The chief minister had assured a team of top officials during a recent meeting that funds would not be a problem, when it came to modernising the police force. "We have been asked to spruce up the law and order machinery and not be worried about the money," a senior police officer told IANS.

Orders have been issued to make a list of the big criminals in the state, so action could be taken against them. The state government has also approved promotion for head constables, under which 25 percent posts would be filled through examinations, and 75 percent through seniority.

In the promotion of sub-inspectors to inspectors in the sanctioned posts, 50 percent would be filled on the basis of seniority, while the remaining would be filled on the basis of merit, officials said.

An increase of 1,765.9 percent has been made in the budget, under the head of software and hardware purchase.

Under the pilot project of computerisation, work to bring police stations online has begun in Ghazipur, Moradabad and Lucknow.

Under this system, first information reports, character certification and other work would be done online, and all necessary information would be made available to people at home.

Under the modernisation plan for the police force, control rooms with GIS and GPS installed in them are being made at Lucknow, Allahabad, Kanpur and Ghaziabad.

A decision has also been taken to include forensic science techniques during autopsy and to construct modern post-mortem examination centres in the state.
