Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh police is going into reports submitted by SPs of districts where recovery of a large number of sacks carrying human bones and jars containing viscera sent shock waves across the state.

The skeletons and other human remains were found stuffed in gunny bags from abandoned autopsy rooms in the police line where they were kept after conducting postmortem examination, official sources said here today.

“We immediately sought report from district police chiefs on the matter. They have been directed to dispose of such skeletons and other materials if investigations have been closed.

There is a laid down procedure for that and they have been asked to follow it,” IG (Law and Order) A Satish Ganesh said.

Ganesh said instructions have been issued to IGs, DIGs and concerned district police chiefs to follow the procedure and the matter would be reviewed within a month.

After over 100 human skeletons were found in Unnao, reports of similar shocking recoveries soon followed from Bahraich, Gorakhpur and Moradabad districts of the state, leaving the state police baffled.

In Bahraich, scores of sacks containing human remains and viscera were found in a room in police lines area, prompting authorities to launch a probe.

Similarly, a heap of human bones and containers carrying viscera were recovered near old post mortem house in Gorakhpur. Besides, sacks containing bones and viscera were found in Moradabad after which an inquiry was ordered.

Authorities have decided to conduct DNA testing and investigate why the bodies were not disposed of as the case appeared to breach of procedures laid down for disposal of bodies after post-mortem examinations.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had sought a detailed report from the Uttar Pradesh government after human skeletons were recovered in Unnao.

The latest incidents came just weeks after some 100 bodies were found floating in Ganga near a cremation area in Unnao.

Police say the bodies were probably given river burials by families too poor to afford enough wood and other materials for a proper cremation.
