Thane: Thane police on Wednesday arrested the editor of an Urdu newspaper for reprinting a controversial cartoon of Prophet Mohammed that was originally carried by French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo earlier this month.

The detained scribe was identified as Shirin Dalvi, the editor of Urdu Daily Avadhnama.

Dalvi was produced in a Thane court yesterday where the magistrate granted her bail and warned not to repeat the act, police said.

In one of the pages of its January 17 issue, Dalvi had carried the image of the Charlie Hebdo cover issue.

Complainant Nusrat Ali, according to police, had registered a case with the Mumbra police alleging that the Urdu newspaper had reprinted controversial cartoons of Prophet Mohammed on daily basis.

On January 7, masked gunmen had forced their way into the office of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris, killing 12 people and injuring many.
