Ahmedabad: Special Task Force of Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested fugitive Chambal dacoit from an Ahmedabad neighbourhood where migrant labourers mainly from Bihar, UP and Madhya Pradesh live.
Identified as Surendra alias Dhara Singh, police said he was carrying Rs 85,000 bounty on his head.
Wanted in many cases in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, Dhara was working for a transporter in Ramol near Vastral, police said. He was driving trucks that brought in packing cases from Mumbai for Amul ice cream.
Dhara was hiding out in a shanty in the vicinity for the last three years, police said, adding that they arrested him after receiving some specific input about his whereabouts.
The arrested dacoit was staying with his elder brother Raju, an autorickshaw driver by profession. Raju has been living here from last 22 years and has two sons. When he was asked about his brother's wrongdoings, he said, “I don't know who Dhara Singh but my brother's name is Surendra Singh.”
Raju informed that his brother, Surendra, was employed at a transport company in Vastral -- a city in Ahmedabad district.
He also claimed that he had no idea that his brother was a Chambal dacoit and wanted in many cases.
Police said that they (Raju and Dhara) are originally a resident of Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh. When Raju was 15, he moved to Ahmedabad to earn livelihood.
On January 31, a team of the Special Task Force of the Uttar Pradesh police arrested Dhara from a tea stall, close to his brother's place.
Police officials are now working on to track the possible links Dhara might have developed during his stay.
