Kolkata: An IPS officer from Uttar Pradesh today wrote to President Pranab Mukherjee stating that he could use his authority under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 to remove Justice A K Ganguly as Chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission.

In a letter written in his individual capacity, Amitabh Thakur, currently posted in Azamgarh, prayed that the power and authority vested under section 22 of the Protection of Human Rights Act be used by the President to immediately remove Ganguly, accused of sexually harassing a law intern.

Thakur said that after indictment by the three-judge inquiry committee of the Supreme Court and the coming into public of the intern's affidavit, “there was no doubt on Ganguly's unwelcome behaviour”.
