New Delhi: The death toll in Uttar Pradesh floods triggered by incessant rainfall rose to 49, officials said on Monday.

31 people have lost their lives in Bahraich and Shrawasti districts alone taking the toll in the state to 49.

The flood fury which continued for the fifth day on Monday affected over 1,500 villages of the state.

Over 8 lakh people remain affected across 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh, where the release of water from overflowing dams in neighbouring Nepal has added to the woes of flood-hit state.

The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh each to the next kin of those who lost their lives in floods.

Schools remained close in the most of the flood affected areas on Monday.

Many schools have either inundated or they have been turned into relief camps.

Thousands of people are compelled to live on river embankments in Bahraich, Shrawasti, Balrampur, Khiri and Sitapur as the relief camps are insufficient to accommodate all of them.

Ghaghra, Rapti and Saryu rivers continue to flow well above the danger mark in most of the areas.
