Agartala, April 13: Tripura will emerge as a total literate state in the country before World Literacy Day on September 8, a minister said yesterday.

A meeting of the State Literacy Mission Authority presided by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar reviewed the status of literacy in the state today and set a target for the state to emerge as the fully literate state before September 8, Finance Minister Badal Chowdhury, who attended the meeting, told reporters.

A survey conducted by district magistrates last August found that less than 1.5 people in the state of about 40 lakh people remained illiterate, who could be made literate by the timeframe.

Chowdhury said, the village level workers of the agriculture department and anganwadi teachers working in the rural areas were being sensitised to undertake a vigorous literacy drive, mainly in the rural and hilly areas to make the people fully literate.

He said, "According to the census report of 2011 Tripura is the third literate state in the country.

"We could not provide literacy drive in rural and hilly areas due to insurgency which thrived for about three decades, but with the insurgency on the wane we are chasing our target," he added.
