Rains halt Mumbai, 2 killed, rail commuters hit hard

Mumbai:  Heavy rains pummelled Mumbai and its suburbs in which two persons died of electrocution and bringing normal life to a grinding halt today with several areas waterlogged and local train services cancelled leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

As civic authorities described the rainfall in the country's financial capital as“unprecedented”, they said 283 mm of rain, which is normally received in 10 days, was witnessed in just 24 hours.

CNR Rao gets Japan's highest civilian award

New Delhi: Eminent scientist and recipient of Bharat Ratna CNR Rao was on Friday conferred Japan's highest civilian award for promoting academic interchange and mutual understanding in science and technology between the two countries.

He was presented with the 'Order of the Rising Sun, GOLD and Silver Star' and certificate by Japanese ambassador to India Takeshi Yagi in the presence of senior officials of the Department of Science and Technology, which Rao has helped shape up over the years.

SC gives Sahara 18 months to pay up Rs.36,000 crore

The Supreme court on Friday gave 18 months to Sahara to repay Rs.36,000 crore of the investors money which its two companies, SIRECL and SHFCL, had collected in 2007-08 through OFCDs.

However, an apex court bench headed by Justice T.S.Thakur reiterated a March 26, 2014 order saying that Sahara chief Subrata Roy and two directors will only be released from Tihar jail, where they are in judicial custody, after Rs.5,000 crore in cash and a bank guarantee of like amount is deposited.

David Cameron says Muslims must do more to counter IS ideology

Bratislava, Slovakia: Prime Minister David Cameron charged Friday that some British Muslims quietly condone the radical ideology of the Islamic State, prompting accusations that he is scapegoating the large and diverse community.

Speaking at a security conference in Slovakia, Cameron urged British Muslims to do more to stop the group from recruiting young Britons. He said disaffected youths are being drawn to an ideology that believes “the West is bad and democracy is wrong, that women are inferior, that homosexuality is evil.”

MS Dhoni fined 75% for shoving incident in 1st ODI against Bangladesh

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was today fined 75 per cent of his match fees for allegedly shoving young Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman during the first ODI of the three-match cricket series, here.

Dhoni was charged with Level 2 offence under ICC Code of Conduct yesterday for elbowing the debutant pacer while chasing an imposing 308-run target set by Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium.
