New Delhi: A hot spring  is produced by the emergence of geothermal heated groundwater in the Earth's crust. 


Hot springs in India have said to be beneficial in healing various diseases.

The water has mineral contents which can cure ailments.

Some of the renowned 5 hot springs in India have been listed below:


1. Bakreshwar hot spring (Bengal)


The hot spring is situated in West Bengal.

Bakreshwar comes from the name of Lord Shiva, Bakra means bent and Ishwar means God.

The story behind the place being a pilgrimage spot is , Satya yuga during the marriage ceremony of Lakshmi and Narayana , Astabakra Muni was insulted by Indra.

The muni was so enraged that he developed 8 cripples in his body. Ashtabakra Muni was blessed by lord Shiva here after many years of Tapashya (meditation).

The place is famous for many hot water springs which attract tourists from all over the country.

It has ten hot springs namely Brahma Kunda, Amrita Kunda etc.

2. Gaurikund (Uttarakhand)


This is the base camp for Hindu pilgrimage site, Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand. Gaurikund is named after Lord Shiva's wife, Parvati.

According to folklores, it is the place where Goddess Parvati used to perform yogic practices to win over Lord Shiva's heart.

They were married at Triyugi Narayan, which is located nearby.

3. Deulajhari (Odisha)

It is a pilgrimage spot for Shaivism.

Located in Angul district of Odisha, the place is famous for 24 hot water springs and a Shiva temple.

The Shiva temple has been constructed amid dense Jasmine forests.

As per records, there were 84 springs but many of them have been overshadowed by these forests.

Now twenty-four springs are alive.

The sulphur layer in the earth's crust makes the water hot.

In front of the temple there are two such twin springs containing the hot and cold water.

This twin spring is a mystery of the nature.

There is constant inter-flow of water between them.

But the temperature of both the springs remains constant.

The water of the hot spring cures skin and nerve diseases.
