Gurgaon: Three feet five inches tall S L Dua, who underwent a heart bypass surgery at Medanta Medicity hospital on September 14 here, is probably the first recorded case of this type of heart bypass surgery on such a short man.
Earlier, five cardiac surgeons he consulted refused to do the surgery, saying Dua, 63, was very high risk as he was just 3 feet and 5 inches tall.
He then came to Gurgaon's Medanta Medicity, where noted cardiac surgeon Dr Naresh Trehan agreed to do the difficult surgery.
Dr Trehan said that it was the first such case among his hundred thousand patients.
Dua wouldn't have survived without the critical bypass as his three major arteries were heavily blocked and he was not suitable for stents either.
Though Dua's family was a bit apprehensive but he did not have a flicker of doubt.
The surgery took almost five hours.
Doctors call it a risk that was worth taking as it will bring a ray of hope for many severely short heart patients.
