Hyderabad: Prominent anti-human trafficking activist Sunitha Krishnan's car was stoned by unknown persons after she launched a campaign against rapists who have shared videos of the horrific assaults.
Two separate videos were posted on YouTube by the activist on Thursday and are being shared on WhatsApp. In one of the videos, five men were seen smiling as they took turns to gangrape a woman even as she pleaded to let her go.
Reportedly, the videos are believed to be at least six months old and were discovered by Krishnan, who runs an anti-trafficking NGO named Prajwala in Hyderabad.
With the help of her filmmaker husband she edited the video to protect the identity of the victim and shared it on social networking websites including Youtube. She uploaded the pictures on Thursday and on Friday morning she turned it into a national campaign with the help of a private news channel.
Sunitha wrote on her Facebook page while sharing the picture, "Some sick pathetic human beings are sending videos of rape on 'whatsapp'. If any of you are getting such videos please report...we will use the same tool to shame and punish the rapist."
Sunitha Krishnan, who is herself a rape survivor, tweeted on Friday that her car was stoned in the morning, minutes after she announced her #ShameTheRapistCampaign.
As part of her campaign, she is trying to meet the Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare Maneka Gandhi to seek intervention in locating and punishing the rapists.
The National Commission of Women took cognizance of the matter and has sought the urgent intervention of the Hyderabad police.
A police team visited the spot and found that the window screens of the vehicle were stoned, he said, adding, that they suspect it to be a mischief.
"It is a crowded area and 15 to 20 other vehicles were parked in the place. It is not possible for someone to throw a stone and run away. It seems to be a mischief...we are probing the matter," the ACP said.
