An IIT-Roorkee student, who escaped after allegedly murdering his girlfriend from IIT-Delhi at a hotel in Shimla, has been arrested from Yamunanagar in Haryana, police said on Sunday.  Gaurav Verma was arrested from a train at Jiradari in Yamunanagar last night while he was fleeing after allegedly murdering 22-year-old Pragati, a student of textile designing at IIT Delhi, Additional Superintendent of Police, Shimla, A K Dhiman said.

The girl is a resident of Patna while the boy is a third-year student of IIT Roorkee and a native of Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh.

While Pragati was found dead with her throat slit in a hotel room in Boileyganj yesterday afternoon, the boy had been missing. A knife, which was lying on the bed, a broken liquor bottle and a laptop were found from the room.

The two had arrived at the hotel at 3 AM on Friday night from Delhi by a taxi.

Shimla police had identified the boy on the basis of the entry made in the hotel records and had spoken to authorities at IIT-Roorkee as well as his parents at Gonda.   The body of the girl has been handed over to her family after post-mortem, the ASP said. PTI
