Srinagar, April 7: The over 400-km-long Srinagar-Leh highway was re-opened - ahead of schedule for vehicular traffic after five months yesterday, officials said.

The 434-km-long highway passing through the Zojilla Pass remains snowbound during the winter months. The Border Roads Organization (BRO), that maintains the highway, this year managed to open it nearly 20 days ahead of schedule.

A total of 100 vehicles were allowed to move towards Srinagar while 250 vehicles carrying essential supplies to the cold desert Ladakh region went across the Zojilla Pass with the supplies.

The highway passes through the north Kashmir's Sonamarg tourist resort in Ganderbal district which is a major tourist destination.

People have expressed relief at the early opening of the highway this year. A senior BRO official said the highway's opening ahead of schedule was possible because of round the clock work on the road by men and machines of the organization.
